Gable End Roof Bracing

The gable end frame is designed to transfer vertical loads from the roof to the continuous bearing wall below.

Strengthen the gable end wall studs. Gable end walls need to be well connected to the wall below and to the roof structure or ceiling diaphragm. Anchor and brace the bottom of the gable end s triangular wall to the ceiling joists or ceiling framing. Another way gable end frames are different from trusses placed in the interior of the structure is that frames experience perpendicular wind loads.

In the attic go to the gable end and examine the area where the triangular wall meets the rectangular wall below. The following actions are recommended to strengthen and properly brace a gable end wall. The gable end should be attached with studs on either side of the jack post. The completed gable end bracing accomplished using the steps outlined below should look like the light colored framing shown in the picture below.

Brace the top of the gable end wall by tying it to the rafters or tops of the trusses.
